I’ve always loved airplanes and even still one of my favourite places in Vantaa is the Helsinki Airport. As a child we used to live close to the airport and it became one of our families favourite pass time places. In the 80’s you were also able to get really close to the planes are look at the through the Airports big windows. Now the area is only for passengers. Luckily there is a scenic terrace with a nice view over to the landing and departing planes. The scenic terrace is the “Cafe’ of the Month” .
I went there on a nice, sunny day so there was a perfect view over to the runway. The terrace is open daily from 7am to 10pm. Unfortunately there was no entrance to the balcony yet as they keep it closed during winter. I visited the terrace twice that day, I love looking at planes and pretending I’m on one them going somewhere excotic. On my first visit, during lunch time. there was only one business man drinking his coffee but later, after work, there were young boys taking photos of the departing planes. From the windows you can see the Runways 1 and 2 as well as the area where they park the planes called the apron area. You can follow the landing and departing planes from the screen. They also act as a source of inspiration for future travels, if you like.
There is a vending machine selling cold drinks but why not grab something with you from the Airport as it has many great options and enjoy it while watching planes. Check out the places to eat & drink at Helsinki Airport.
The scenic terrace is open to anyone visiting the airport and there is no entrance fee. The way to the terrace is easy when walking from terminal two towards Hilton Airport and the Finnair building in front of it. There are many signs along the way. The building is accessible and there is an elevator that takes you to the 6th floor.
It really doesn’t help to cure ones wonderlust, but if you love the look of planes as much as I do, I really recommend you to go there for some plane spotting. I’d love to go on one Finnair’s new A350 planes one day soon…
The terrace is open daily from 7am to 10 pm 7-22
The balcony is closed in winter time
