This May we will try out places in Kivistö, an interesting area in West Vantaa. In 2015 it hosted the Housing Fair with a theme on ecological living and building, The largest wooden appartment building was one of the most visited sites during the fair. If you into architecture and food Kivistö is the place for you. It’s easy to reach by train and car. Take the P train from Helsinki City Centre or I train from Helsinki Airport (either or) you’ll be there in max 15 min.
Our this Month’s cafe, Beer & Café Solmu, opened a littel over a year ago. It’s only a stone throw away from the Railway Station. Next door you’ll find Trattoria Limone, May’s restaurant, as well a recently opened Wtkns Döner. New places are popping up as new houses are beeing built which is the way to go.
I’d heard many good things about Solmu so I had to go there and I am happy I did. It’s a really easy going place, friendly staff. They concentrate on beers from smaller breweries and don’t sell the ost commons brands on the tap. They also have coffee, tea and finger food, hot dogs and sallad. The deco is really nice and I love how they bring the location into it. There are old and new photos from Kivistö, Keimolanmäki and the Airport.
It was early afternoon when I visited Solmu but it really feels like you could have a great night out at Solmu but also a fun low key game night. Can’t wait for the weather to become warmer because Solmu has a great big terrace area to be bale to sit in the sun and enjoy a tasty beer or warm coffee (with Finnish Summer youäll never know if it’ll be hot or cold but it’ll always be light).
They also organize Stan up comedy nights at Solmu.
I had to try their hot dogs as I love a goof hot dog. I chose the TLNB hot dog that had blue cheese, tomato, bacon, onion and pickels. To go with the hot dog I choses the smoke porter (Savu porter). Nice combo! I was really happy about the hot dog it tasted so good and the bun was really good.
They had just baked cinnamon rolls (korvapuusti) at the cafe and I just couldn’t resist. I’m glad that I couldn’t it was delicious.
